If at first you don’t succeed, try again using someone else’s system: Sony is pulling the plug on its current streaming music offering, Music Unlimited, and hitching its wagon to Spotify’s star with a new partnership for PlayStation.
Sony will shut down Music Unlimited on March 29, with the new service called PlayStation music debuting sometime this spring, the company announced in a blog post today.
It’s been tough road for Sony’s on-demand streaming service, which started as Qriocity (say it out loud, groan) in 2010 in the UK and Ireland before expanding to 19 countries and changing its name multiple times. Enough is enough, it seems, as Spotify will now take over to power the new service.
Users will be able to listen to and manage their Spotify tracks and playlists from PlayStation consoles, and can link Spotify and PlayStation Network accounts so you can pay for premium Spotify services through the PSN wallet. Gamers will also be able to listen to music while playing games on the PS4.
It’ll be available in 41 countries including the United States, Australia and the UK on PlayStation 3 and 4 consoles as well as Xperia smartphones and tablets.
